The
Series
Harry Babasin fronts
his own group in the third Nocturne offering with the Harry Babasin
Quintet.
Here, Harry plays cello, and shares the bass duties with Bob Enevoldsen
, who plays valve trombone
when Harrys on bass. Larry Bunker, vibes, Jimmy Rowles, piano,
and Roy Harte, drums, round out
the quintet. Another four star rating in August 11,1954 Downbeat,
this album has Harry on cello, in a
contrapunctal style with the vibes - an unusual and unique voicing
to jazz, and one that set the ground-
work for Harry's group, The Jazzpickers, later in his life. Another
excellent production by Nocturne.
Another in the Jazz
in Hollywood series is the Bob Enevoldsen Quintet. Bob, this time,
performs on
valve trombone and tenor sax, displaying considerable musicianship
on both. He's joined by Howard
Roberts on guitar, Marty Paich on piano, Harry Babasin on bass
and Don Heath on drums. Roy
Harte joins the quintet on one tune, on bongos. Yet another four
star rating in Downbeat, De-
cember 1, 1954, this had an excellent blend of Enevoldsen's horns
and the imaginative guitar
of Howard Roberts. The review went on to say Paich's work on this
album "...was in
especially fertile form...". Another piece of definitive
west coast jazz history.
