Review by ACE DIAMOND - ONOFFON
"First off; Onoffon, what a great name, I love it. The musical efforts were just as good too. There are so many cuts on this page I would be forever trying to review each one in text. Couldn't pick out a fave since I enjoyed them all so much. This artist has his chops together. Very polished in every way. This is some of the best music that I have reviewed to date, and if I was using the old number scale system, it would be waaaay up there. These guys remind me of some top session players I know, and should have what it takes to have a poke at vip status. Go listen, there's something for everyone there. You should be very proud of your musical talent....credit when it's due! Onoffon is truly amazing, and I really think they are going to be very big in the music business."CaveDog - RECOMMENDED LISTEN

"The true measure of a smily review is the amount of praise one recieves. After reviewing over 300 songs on mp3.com to date, I find there's one great benefit to the task. You get to find some real gems, and "Shadowglass" is one of them. On occasion, there's a rare artist who pegs the smiley meter and ONOFFON today joins those much honored ranks. I have no criticism whatsoever. This critic is humbled." - CaveDogJ.D.R.
"'Mardi Gras' - Great band. Tasty alto good chops, lots of experience there I can tell. Good mix. Good production. Everything is very tight and has great feeling to it. Lots of soul here sounds great. I played in New Orleans myself and loved it there. Great job guys. I don't have a clue why you guys are not stars yet." - J.D.R.notesleb
"ONOFFON is certainly one of my favorite bands...definitely amongst the Top 5 bands I have found on the internet. Peace" - Steve LeBlancpyro013
"I honestly can't think of a single thing that could use some work on in this song so i cant give any advice on improving it. Your group is extremely talented."dude1234567890
"ONOFFON, first of all, thanks for having enough faith that I can review a Latin/Salsa/Jazz project. I'm going to try to just focus on the musical elements of the track. Obviously the purpose of this track is to feature your sax player. Job well done on that part. That backers stay right with it and never become intrusive. The sax manages very well to carry out it's part of the deal. It's got that nice jazzy flow and feel. Even though you're stabbing at a syncopated staccato, it's flowing on a jazzy tip. One thing that I have to give you major props on is the melodic movement. One thing I notice in a lot of the popular jazz artists is that they come up with some huge machinations in the first bout with the theme, but by the time the theme comes around two or three more times you realize you're just watching reruns. You have however managed to not only keep each reiteration of the theme interesting, but the listener hardly notices that you've gone off into the second movement and back into the theme until way after it's happened. So very important. Well, I can't really say this song is lacking much of anything. Produced well. I don't even have to mention how talented the players are as they speak for themselves. Anyway, solid work. Keep it
comin'." - Late Slackshire1s and 0s
"Hi, the only thing I have to say about this is that it sounds great. Very upbeat. I would love to hear you guys live. I'll bet you put on a great live show if you can make a studio track sound this good. Excellent! 9.5/10"H.G.L.

"Hi there! L.A. based ONOFFON deliver a mixture of Salsa, Latin and Jazz of superior quality that I have ever heard in this genre. Excellent musicians and outstanding arrangements make ONOFFON an exceptional Act to who it's fun to listen and dance. While showing impressing craft and being a consummate master of it - the soloists as well as the rhythm group - ONOFFON never let the listener get lost in complicated sound or composition structures as to what the musical description may easily lead one's opinion in the first place. ONOFFON understand perfectly how to combine superb musicality with simple-sounding music. And that is definitely what makes ONOFFON exceptional." - ManfredDad Mad

"Sweetness wrapped up in beautiful douced with perfection - dripping with creativity and uniqueness. When everyone sounds like everyone - it takes mindful, creative genuise's to compete in the pop market with a jazz CD.
These guys stand out because their music blends all that is natural and good in the world. Their energy, their dedication, their spirit, -- is all from the old world and they have kept that door opened and allowed it to enter in to today. I'm not describing their music because that's something you can do on your own terms when you have listened to it. But I will tell you it's something you should definitely take the time to sit down and really listen to. "Onoffon is one of the best and consistent bands I have encountered since I got involved in the internet indie music scene a year ago. "I've been listening to these guys online for a couple of years now - they are one of the tightest, most versatile groups around - way cool stuff!! These guys are great! Very pleasant listening, defies categories. Nice variety, grooves, airy stuff, interesting instrument combinations and rhythms. Would love to see one of their live shows! You won't find a more enjoyable mix of music - just great stuff! These guys are *most definitely* way more ON

"Firstly, as someone who has seen Referenda develop from almost the beginning I have to say this is probably the toughest list of artists there's been so far. I believe ONOFFON would work well on the roster. They are certainly professional enough musically. Its not my usual musical preference but their ability can keep me listening and believe me that's tough to do. Good job guys. I hope you get the vote. Which brings me to the thing I have noticed.... The bands with the most views/comments/posts/ etc... seem to be the ones who get the vote! Therefore I am confident here to say that even with other top quality bands in the list like Paris By Air and Marcus Williams I believe ONOFFON will be on the roster this time next month!" - DelKim Novak - Re: Just something I've noticed

"If you hadn't have submitted your music to us all I would not have had a chance to hear it. I think this thread shows how much of a dedicated following you have. You are lucky to have people who care enough about you and your music to make the effort. Perhaps its because you appreciate what they do. It's nice to see a band who recognizes their supporters. Long may your music grow." - Jimmy.

"This stuff is UNIQUE! Nice'n direct sounding recording, discriminating performance. This music can hardly be
organized to genre-drawers. Listen to "SHADOWGLASS" and...yes the groove/changes come in smooth(-Jazz)
always. But the music is far away from what most SmoothJazz listeners rate for. Too intelligent arrangements and composition, too much focus on sound and expression, too big the readiness for risks (Guitarsolo), too outstanding the musicians skills. And "YOUR MIND" as AcidJazz ? Imagine a KingCrimson merger with Manhattan Transfer, conducted by the eldered Frank Zappa. Don't get me wrong. Here's nothing to criticize. I am happy to be hit by pure excitement!"C M, N/A, - Rating: 10.00
"These guys have a great ensemble approach to their music; the whole thing works really well. "Mardi Gras" has a light touch that makes the music come alive. Nothing seems excessive or out of place - very impressive. "Shadowglass" makes a 5/4 groove work without resorting to the typical "Take 5" approach to this time signature. The interplay of the flute and guitar is quite effective. For a small ensemble jazz group, these guys do a tremendous job."Carimba, Scotland, - Rating: 9.00
"Mardi Gras" is a track that has been hard to miss over the last few months! The success it has acheived is well merited - great musicianship, great feel, well produced. We thought long and hard about who this track reminded us of and the best we can come up with is John Handy in a good mood! Hope that is deemed a compliment. The track itself is melodic enough to be tuneful but complex enough to be interesting. Great rhythm section, topped with excellent horn playing. Good stuff and good luck!"Funksquad, Albany, NY - Rating: 10.00

"The music made by ONOFFON is always an experience, not casual listening, although they are easy on the ears. They incorporate a multitude of influences and through some very special alchemy turn it into their own unique sound. Surrender Now, is a spectacular use of the voices of ONOFFON, and concentrates on uplifting lyrics. True originals."Hamish Davidson, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, - Rating: 10.00

"ONOFFON - Mardi Gras seems to be the popular favorite and for good reason, but I must say that Weekend in Montreal is our favorite. That horn, my gosh, not just technically right on, but such emotion is conveyed. So many different song styles combined into one piece... I just don't have words to express how much we like this song and how much you should listen to it! From quiet and melodic to wildly frenetic and back again and again and again. Quite a trip. All the work on ONOFFON's page has the same gorgeous musical, technical and emotive quality, but this one stands out to me from the rest. A totally different song Please Baby Please makes me smile. Quite a bass line and fun small percussion. Vocals fit the mood perfectly. Great harmonies and a hooky chorus. A perfect example of how each of ONOFFON's pieces is totally different from the last, making listening a real adventure. You don't know what you're going to hear next, but you know it'll be the best of the best."Al - Poised For The Worm
"'Mardi Gras': I love this sound. Well produced, and a great performance. I've always said, it's easy to record good musicians, and you can tell that all of these guys are good musicians. 'Wetlegs': This is very different. A very wet sounding song. Wow I like it when it gets heavy, you don't expect it. Good vocals. I can't even think of a comparison to these guys except maybe Coverdale/Page which I guess would denote a little Zeppelin. Then it kicks into a bit of a Tea Partyish sound. Very BIG FULL sound. Well produced when you consider the amount of stuff going on in this song, it transitions well from the heavy stuff to the quieter stuff. Definitely going on my station. 'ShadowGlass': Another strong tune. Feel good rock with a jazz feel. 'Your Mind': Man you guys are crazy! This stuff rocks! I've never heard scat layered over such heavy beats! It's insanity! Great vocals & harmonies. It's like loose jazz ON STERIODS! It has been added to my station! 'Weekend in Montreal': Yeah I like it! It reminds me of my last trip there. Sitting in Biddles, having the best steak in the city and listening to some live jazz.'Bebe's Song': COOL! Lounge! You're such a crooner. 'Opus': A very ominous intro compared to the other songs. Great guitar work. Was that a rain stick? I'm now listening to Opus live, you guys sound great live. Man I wish that woman in the
background would shut the hell up! I'm going to listen to the rest of this later. Looking forward to it. Good stuff."Mick OD
"Onoffon - 'Mardi Gras' - What a great song to help escape the stress and strain of life. A feel good song full of happy energy to pick up your spirits. Makes you want to just take off for a weekend in New Orleans. Onoffon come together to present a very tight, euphoric journey into the pleasures of sound. Who needs drugs. Just get up and
dance. It's magic. Should be prescribed before any anti-depressants."Terry Sigler
"Onoffon: Well written songs with excellent instrumentation and production. Particularly liked "Rock Garden". Can't put my finger on who the vocals remind me of."ChUcK
"ONOFFON - First I'd like to say that I have a terrible habbit of typing OFFONOFF. Don't know why LOL. "Mardi Gras" - OK well I'm a sucker for a saxophone to begin with, so you've got me already. And while Latin Jazz isn't really my thing, the chord progression's got me hooked to this one. "Rock Garden" - Well, the description was right. Sounds like that "First-Fifth-Ninth" thing that I love for some reason. The harmonica's a nice unexpected touch. Good stuff! Interesting lyrics, too."Laurie - Chiwawa
"I have listened to ONOFFON before and do enjoy them the fourth time around. A fresh lively feel on Mardi Gras is performed by top notch players. The title, the air, the mood are all so Mardi Gras-ish...let's CELEBRATE! Congrats Von. You guys should do the Montreal International Jazz Fest...just let me know..maybe I can help get you a gig."Mark Hewer
"'Mardi Gras' by ONOFFON is like taking a trip to New Orleans without ever leaving. This smooth jazzy number is tight, innovative and full of excellent playing by all musicians. Top notch stuff! This song sounds exactly like its' title. It's fun, exciting and the only thing missing is the alcohol and bare boobs."Dave - Snoozebox
"ONOFFON: 'Mardi Gras': The music is just excellent, in many genre's where I do not hear too much of. The horn is just sick, I enjoyed it very much so. I especially like the drumming on this track, it has that cool dance, salsa, grooving feel. I actually had to listen to this three times, it was THAT good. 'Rock Garden': Very cool, melodic tune. The singer sounds like someone, but I can't put my finger on it. This one is very radio friendly, I like it the most when the vocals do go wilder. Out of the two I do like Mardi Gras better, only because it uses music I am not used to hearing."Lise - Indie
"Onoffon: I know this band from Virtual Records, and they are very versatile and always seem to catch me off guard
with their range and talent. I like the song Mardi Gras.. happy, upbeat, and catchy!"

brings them to the frontline in the future of music. They have firmly made there presence felt through out the

"The pronouncement issued by various "jazz fundamentalists" that "Fusion is dead" has been proven to be premature by ONOFFON. ONOFFON has contributed greatly to the continuing evolution of jazz and fusion.
Their musicianship is uncompromising and their musicality has a broad appeal that transcends the labeling.
As a "Fusion" artist myself, I am greatly encouraged and inspired by the existence and growing success of
ONOFFON!"Jeza

"Wow!! ONOFFON really knows how to grab your attention. The first cut on their mp3.com site is called 'Mardi Gras.' It is an up tempo jazz number that has one of the better horn tones that I have heard in a while. Their other songs move in a contemporary direction but does not altogether abandon a casual, experimental approach. The music is performed more by more than able musicians. What is remarkable about it is, according to their info page, their efforts are self-produced. ...Now that's LOVE!!" - AlamantraBernie
"Being in a rock band, I usually don't stray far from the types of music that I play, however, ONOFFON is one of those rare gems that make you realize and appreciate how incredible someone else's approach to music can be without fitting into any one mold."Banker

Weekend in Montreal
"I know these guys, and am proud to hail from LA, as they do. This song is definitely ON,OFF,ON - it puts you through some changes. Aggressive, angular, - NOT music to do dishes by. The sax player works in the tradition of Albert Ayler and Marion Brown, but the band is not afraid to set a groove and stick to it along the way. This is music that demands attention."Patti Sterling
"Listening to Onoffon's music is such a pleasure, I like to do it when I can be totally tuned in . . . the singing is as viable as the music, and the music is significant in it's originality. "Surrender Now" is a favorite cut, seamless vocals and expert playing join with lyrics coming from the Spiritual side. Their influences are varied, and to their credit, so well blended they have created music which is totally unique. Such inventiveness is a major acheivement in today's climate. Pump up da' jam!"Askold Buk
"It's a testament to one's songwriting skills when he/she can grab your interest immediately. Onoffon did just that with "Weekend in Montreal" - they had me hooked after the first five notes! What a powerful, catchy theme, especially in an "outside" setting! After the sax flurry, the tune takes you to a few different thematic/textural places. Great sax work, too!"Mike Fijal
"I've been listening to this very fine fusion band for awhile now and I never tire of their sound. Weekend in Montreal is a good example of their ability to dazzle with adventurous experiments and creative innovations. They stretch your ears in a highly musical way. They have a way of taking you on a space trip in their tunes. They have wonderful flow. Every tune is an engaging voyage deeper into space jazz. I love these guys."Chris Burnett
"Weekend in Montreal" by ONOFFON
"Veteran online group, ONOFFON brings a nice brand of jazz fusion online. The recorded composition which is subject of review here is actually arranged in epic fashion with dramatic introductions, theme, development and interlude. The music is performed by musicians and recorded in a studio. Tenor saxophone carries much of the melodic and improvisational load here. The support provided by a dynamic and sensitive rhythm section of guitar, bass and drums provides an adveturous backdrop to this song. Listening to this selection by ONOFFON just may bring back musical recollections of such cutting edge groups like: Flim and the BBs; and even, "keyboardless" Return To Forever when Joe Farrell was on sax. If you like jazz fusion grounded in the foundation, check out ONOFFON.

ONOFFON - Wet Legs
"Great groove for a progressive rock tune. These guys know how to produce a song. The singer displays some good emotion in this song. Good rhythm guitar and syncopated percussive beat. The song is mellow enough to relax you, but the lyrics are little on the humorous side to help you relieve some heavy stress. At least it made me relaxed. If you don't like parental discretionary lyrics, then listen to this with caution, but I think everyone can relate."Cytrus
ONOFFON - Mardi Gras
"My first impression of "Mardi Gras" was, that it sounds fresh. I do not know why it is named "Mardi Gras", it does not bring in my mind schools out for summer feelings of New Orleans, perhaps it doesn't have to, nor I've been there. Anyway there is nice well performed laidback jamming. Apparently players are enjoying what they do. In overall I like the mood of the song, goes well in background and takes more intensive listening too."

"I wanted to let you know that I went to a New Year's Party, and I brought a couple of CD's with me. There came that point when people were trying to decide what to play next. Traffic's "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" was just wrapping up. The mood seemed right so I pulled out "Surrender Now", and "Your Mind". The host slipped them both in, and it was ONOFFON for the next two and a half hours or so. Well, they were huge hits with the crowd. Everybody kept asking..."Who is this?" - "I've never heard this before." - "Where did you find these guy's." It was great, and you ended up being the hit of a party on the island of Martha's Vineyard. How Cool!""Wet Legs" -

"Easy Jazz with Soul. Nice guitar work. A very soothing sound. All performers are very obviously talented. 5/4 is my favorite time signature, one can do no wrong in it. Good choice of scale structures in the guitar solo. The overall production is well done."durkina1764
"Funky, heady, jazzy, 70s smart composition. I REALLY liked this track--I liked the odd time signatures, the complexity of the tune/arrangement, the use of flute. Well-put together, well-thought out. This tune definitely stands out from most of everything else I've heard on garageband.com. I can't say much else. I wouldn't change anything."Singer377 - Shorewood, Illinois

"wow why the hell are u on this web site. this is the best song i've heard on here. incredible 100 % professional cool arrangment. true jazz with complex structure it tickles your ears. the best song i have heard on here by a long shot. i dig the groove keep up the good work. i really like thoses clean drum rolls, and the slow and fast parts are good together great everything. usually i make a lot of criticisms and suggest tons of ways to improve but this i really can't complain. really excellent great job guyz."chikafilipina - Richmond, B.C., Canada
"AWESOME! You grabbed my attention right off the bat. This is the kind of swinging jazz that I love a lot. Got to say the way you slowed it down in the middle of the song was great. Everything just works so well together, and the SAX!!! Yay! Great job! You guys are doing awesome. I really like this stuff and would love to hear more by you."Lingon - Arboga, Västmanland, Sweden
"Ohhh my god!!! I'm amazed!!! I really like the Sax intro. All you guys are great performers, the drummer really knows what he is doing (as for the saxophone). In some parts you guys remind me of GONG."TheOnlyWarrior - Brighton, Victoria, Australia
"Crazy! Love the delay on the sax! Breaking into the slower section works really well. The fingerpicked guitar part is modulating a touch too much at the start, but the feel is really nice. The second rock ballad section is the best part of the song in my opinion but I don't think that the contrast works, at least on first listen, but its a very strong ending. Good luck!""Please Baby Please" -

"Hot Group Puts Out Chillin' Track. This track is like a good Manahattan--a little sweet but packing a kick behind it. The lyrics made me smile, the melody and beat chilled me out, and the slapping/clapping/snapping in the background definitely got me tapping/clapping/snapping. This sounds really polished. Sorry to heap nothing but praise, but I love this song."DJIcon - Milwaukee, Wisconsin
"Imagine if Clapton did more jazzy stuff. Reminds me of a more jazzy Clapton song. To tell you the truth, I cant find anything negative, except, maybe a little more on the vocal accents towards the end of the verses. All around, a good song."Ryerson - Kitchener, Ontario, Canada

"dirty beats and rumbling blues. Funky azz bass kicks it up a notch right from the start. And then the rhythm section slowly spirals down into an unholy funkafonic session of dirty beats and rumbling blues. Very well done. Quite enjoyable..."TheExpCmt - Santa Monica, California
"Funky Jazz...u bet your azz! I freaked when the harmonica started whaling over that groovy bass line. This is one of the best songs I've heard on GB...great job!"RhythmGJ - Amherst, New York
"Is it Yes? James Blood Ulmer? Or Hip-Hop? ...Don't confront me none; it's all good... Moog-ish/Lo-Fo bassline is pretty neat-o. The Clave/Bo-Diddley counter-groove is cool too. Wow. Who-da-thunk a one chord (well almost) jam could be so interesting, but it is _very_. The blues harp and vocals are just the ticket... I wonder if this group had difficulty deciding whether to put this in the Jazz, Blues, or Rock (Progressive Rock) category? No matter, anything this well-recorded and performed, and any group with the stones to play something as busy as this in 17/8 deserves the 5 they get. Just don't expect to make the Billboard Charts."
